TELEMETRY OPTION
********************
Bill, NJ7P has developed a prototype node telemetry option intended to work
in concert with TheNet Plus. This adaptor has 16 lines of digital I/O which
are divided into two ports of eight lines each. The ports are SYSOP selectable
as to input or output. This gives the following options:
a. Both ports TO the site.
b. Both ports FROM the site.
c. Port A TO and port B FROM the site.
d. Port A FROM and port B TO the site.
An analog to digitial converter is on the telemetry board. It is referenced
to 0 and +5 volts. The unit has multiplier resistors and is software
configurable. It has ranges of 0-5, 0-10, 0-15, 0-20, or 0-25 volts with
a resolution of 20 millivolts at 0-5 volts. An external quad Op-Amp circuit
allows DC voltage gain matching between external sensors and an appropriate
voltage range.
The telemetry board fits inside the TNC. It plugs into the Z-80 CPU socket at
U22. The CPU then plugs into a socket on the telemetry board. The only TNC
modification is the addition of wires between unused RS-232 pins and telemetry
board header. Shielded wires are ran between on-site sensors or controlled
devices and the RS-232 connector.
Telemetry applications include: Remote monitoring of power supply voltages,
forward and reflected RF power, inside-outside temperature, precipatation, wind
velocity, barometric pressure or, controlling beam antenna headings, etc.
The Telemetry option is not yet available. More design effort is required for
code and interface development. Specifically, Bill is searching for sensor
designs which can be home-brewed at low cost. Circuit design is simplified if
the sensor output is a linear voltage. Currently under test are interfaces
allowing battery voltage and wind velocity measurement.
This project is going to take time. There isn't yet a source for ready made
boards. Rather than delay release of TheNet Plus version 2.10, it's been
decided to impliment the telemetry option in a future release. Meanwhile, if
anyone has specific sensor design and application information to share, please
feel free to contact Bill.
